    Waaaaait a minute ... NASA *DID* develop batteries that are thrown away after use! The Lunar Module ascent stage on the Apollo spacacraft used batteries for power, and on each Apollo mission with a LEM it either incinerated in the Earth's atmosphere or was tossed off into a Solar orbit.
